This area stretches from the historic border city of Carlisle, gateway to Hadrian's Wall Country in the north, to the sheltered Eden Valley further south, with its smooth rounded fells of the Howgills which were amongst Alfred Wainwright's favourite areas (Famous for his pictorial guides to the Lakeland fells).
Carlisle is surrounded by breathtaking countryside and was once scene to warring family feuds and bloody battles known as the Border Reivers between the 14th and 17th Centuries.
Many Roman remains, castles and battlefields also bear testimony to a turbulent past, which contrasts sharply with the rich pastures, natural woodlands, wild fells and meandering rivers of Carlisle's Northern Borderland.
The Eden Valley, ancient location of the Celtic Kingdom of Rheged, is perfect for walkers and cyclists with many forest tracks, footpaths and bridleways. The beautiful River Eden flows down the valley, edged with red sandstone walls, caves, gentle fords and wide peaceful reaches. To the East are Alston, England's highest market town and the rugged North Pennines.
East Cumbria is also an ideal location to stay in if you would like to visit the Yorkshire Dales, with its beautiful rolling scenery, spectacular views and endless outdoor activities. The Yorkshire Dales National Park has the Pennine Way and Coast to Coast long distance footpaths. A visit to Aysgarth and the spectacular falls, or maybe a cycle ride on one of the many routes which cross through the area. The famous Three Peaks attract climbers and walkers from all over the world.
