The Northern Lakes is an area of astonishingly beautiful countryside, covering the north western area of the Lake District. This is an ideal place for a peaceful walk amongst the breathtaking mountains. One of the most scenic railway journeys in England it meanders its way through 72 miles of stunning countryside scattered with picturesque little villages and cuts through 24 tunnels and over 20 viaducts.
For walkers especially with the privilege of being able to follow some of the many designated paths round the lakes, taking in the fresh air and occasionally passing through fine woodlands this area is a firm favourite.
Keswick is the main town in the Northern Lakes and attracts visitors from far and wide. A trip on one of the water buses operated by the Keswick Launch Company enables visitors to sit back, relax and enjoy the lakes and the wonderful fells. The town itself has a wide range of shops, restaurants and pubs to explore. and has some of the best outdoor clothing shops in the north, perfect for climbers and walkers.
Fishing, cycling, mountain biking, walking and water sports of all kinds are popular pastimes in the Northern Lakes for those who really enjoy the great outdoors.
Visitors can also enjoy the famous Theatre by the Lake, Cumberland Pencil Museum, Honister Slate Mine, and with many other attractions can never be bored.
